Moses Boyd – Criticise Ft. Amber-Simone

Moses Boyd spent six years making an album about faith, and “Criticise” doesn’t waste time getting to the uncomfortable part: judgment dressed up as concern. Amber-Simone takes the vocal and makes it count, riding a Hammond organ and distorted, high-energy funk groove that Boyd, playing drums and steering the whole thing as bandleader, keeps tight. Until a guitar solo takes over the spotlight right at the end. “The hardest I’ve worked on any music,” he says of the sessions.

The track announces Songs For Sinners, his second album and first in six years, out October 30. Its roots go back to growing up in a Pentecostal household, where gospel was his first musical language before jazz and London’s soundsystem culture broadened things further. The record fuses all three with Caribbean rhythms, 808s, and choir harmonies rather than treating any of them as a fixed tradition. Boyd wrote every lyric himself and pulled in Chuck Strangers, Raelle, and Steam Down’s Shantéh as guests, alongside what he’s calling his family’s “kitchen choir,” recorded together at home and mixed in with professional gospel singers.
